Fun DIYs from Alicia!

Hello Friends and Family,

Finally, it is Friday, which means Thanksgiving weekend is here! Time for some delicious turkey and good times with our friends and family.

This month I’ve decided to show you two easy, fun, and inexpensive crafts to create over this long weekend. The first project is an Olaf costume from the movie Frozen. Halloween costumes these days can be very expensive and this a costume that will not break the bank; it is also very fun to make.  The second project is a DIY decorative jar for Fall. This jar is great for the current season and can be used in a variety of ways. 

DIY OLAF COSTUME 

What you will need:

•       White top

•       White beanie

•       Black, brown, and white felt

•       Orange construction paper

•       Brown pipe cleaners

•       Some kind of stick (Example: chopstick)

•       Glue (Glue gun works the best)

•       Scissors

Instructions:

1)  Body

Cut 3 circles (roughly 3 ½”) from the black felt. Using a glue gun, glue them on the white top vertically like the body of a snowman.

2)  Eyes

Cut 2 more circles from the black felt (roughly 3”). Then cut 2 circles (slightly smaller than your black ones) from the white felt. Glue the white circles on each of the black circles to create the eyes. Finally cut out 2 circles (roughly 1”) and glue those on the white circles. 

3)  Rest of the Face

Cut 2 eyebrow shapes (roughly 3” long) from the brown felt. Then glue the eyes and eyebrows directly onto the white beanie. To finish off Olaf’s head, use the pipe cleaners and poke through the fabric from the top of the beanie and back through to create his hair. 

4) The Nose

Roll the orange paper into a cone shape and cut off the excess paper. Glue to your choice of stick and you have your nose.

And there you have it, your very own Olaf costume!  You can accessorize it as well by wearing sunglasses!

FALL MASON DECORATIVE JAR

What you will need:

•       Craft leaves 

•       A glass jar

•       Twine or ribbon

•       Glue Gun 

Instructions

Glue the leaves around the base of the jar. Make 

sure to glue the leaves to the bottom of the jar as well. Using the twine or ribbon, wrap it around the jar a number of times.  Finish off your jar by tying a bow at the front. These jars are very useful for items such as pinecones or candy and can even be used to create a candle by inserting a flameless tea light inside the jar.

Check out our new displays at Sr. OSC!

Hello Friends and Family!

It is now October and the weather is getting colder day by day. Just a friendly reminder that all kids should start bringing a jacket to school so they can continue to enjoy the outdoors even as the weather changes.

There are a some new boards up at Sr. OSC to check out. “Who Dat, Who Dat?” board consists of random facts about leaders.  Children can try to guess which fact belongs to which leader. After they make a guess, they can flip up the piece of paper covering the picture of the leader. There are some pretty interesting facts so be sure to check it out!

Another new board is the Birthday Board that has the birthdays of all the children on display. It’s pretty cool to see the upcoming birthdays so they’re not forgotten about. More often than not, a birthday passes unnoticed and we want everybody to feel special on their big day.

The last board “#Snacktivities” shows the upcoming snacks and afternoon activities we have planned for the month. We have found in the past the kids are always curious as to what will be for snack or art.  Having the calendars on display should help peak their interest and keep everyone full and entertained for the whole year!

HEARTY SNACK

It's that time of year again! School is back in session and everyone is starting to ask the infamous October question: “what are you going to be for Halloween?” As the seasons change and OSC is returning into the swing of Fall, certain changes are about to take place.

A keystone of OSC is that at around 3:00pm everyday, snack is provided to the students. Throughout the summer months, our snacks have consisted of a variety of ‘boxed goods’ such as scrumptious goldfish crackers, yummy fruit gummies and toasted grilled cheese sandwiches. Like the colours of the trees outside, our snack program is changing too!

Starting next week we are reintroducing hearty snacks. Hearty snacks take a ‘health and fresh’ prep focus to producing our snacks. As of Monday, October 6^th, two of our staff members will be meeting up everyday at West to plan, prepare and cook snacks for that given day. Our staff are given free reign to come up with creative and delicious meals to be served to both our Senior & Junior OSC programs. Some tasty treats on the menu for October include french toast muffins, lettuce wraps, mini tacos and cheese scones.

On Mondays and Wednesdays hearty snacks will be prepared by Katie & Stuart; Tuesdays and Fridays are lead by Monica & Aislinn; and on Thursdays it will be Sara & Matt. These leaders have the choice to make whatever they’d like as long as there is some element of cooking or baking involved. There is a strong balance between baked goods and cooked meals; all delicious, all hearty, and all ready for the kids J

Welcome Back!

First off I'd like to welcome everyone back to Gilmore Sr.OSC! After a fun-filled summer our team is looking forward to starting the school year off with a bang.  We look forward to seeing all our familiar faces and we gladly welcome those who are new to Sr. OSC. If you have not had a chance to meet all the staff, please do not hesitate to say “Hello!” and introduce yourself. Our team has been and will continue to make their rounds on a daily basis, introducing themselves.

As school starts up again we get back into our routines.  Here is a friendly reminder of the important things that take place in our program:

•  Breakfast is served daily from 7:00am-8:00am 
• Hot breakfast is served Monday, Wednesday and Friday’s with regular breakfast being offered throughout the week as well. 
• What is served for breakfast changes throughout the week as the leader’s try to provide the kids with some variety, however, there is always cereal, bread, english muffins, oatmeal, and juice.
• 
  
•  Bus pick up times are as follows for the following schools and we request that your kid(s) be dropped off by the designated times, if they require transportation by us. If you miss the designated time, please drop off your kid(s) directly at school as the bus does only one pick up in the morning.
• If your child goes to Quilchena or Dixon; please arrive at Gilmore Sr. OSC no later than 8:00am

• If your child will NOT be coming to Gilmore Sr. OSC after school please remember to give us a call at: 604.272.3661. That is the direct line for our program and during off hours we have a voicemail available to you. Please leave us a clear and detailed message, otherwise there is a good chance we will be hassling you quite frequently until we know your kid(s) whereabouts, and we all know how annoying that can be!

These are just some of the reminders from Gilmore Sr. OSC, in the mean time we hope that you will join us in ushering in another awesome school year. We look forward to getting to know and/or catching up with everyone. If you have any questions please do not hesitate and let us know.

The Compliment Board

Hello Parents!

At Sr. OSC we are always trying our best to create an positive environment for both the children and staff.  As many of you might have already seen, "The Compliment Board" is a great way to spread this positive energy!

Here is a picture of the board itself, which is frequently updated as more compliments are written:

On this board, both kids and staff are encouraged to write compliments to each other based on anything positive they have observed in others.  Typically, the kids congratulate others on their achievements, thank them for their friendship, give them encouragement and praise each other's talents.  

Here's how it works:

As you can see, writing a compliment to someone is now easy and fun! A person can write however many compliments they want to whomever they wish.  Also, with the submitting of compliments to the "Drop Box" you can rest assured that a note written to your child is kind and positive as the compliments in the "Drop Box" are checked over by staff before being displayed on the board! Then, of course, the best part of the board is that if a compliment is written to your child, they can take it home!

Here is an example of how The Compliment Board can be used not only for compliments, but also for words of encouragement!

Everyday we notice positive things or actions in others, but sometimes these praises and observations go left unsaid.  With The Compliment Board, it is now easier to say these things to each other, thus creating an environment where we feel happy both with ourselves and others!
