Hope you are all looking forward to Halloween this year. On Wednesday, Oct. 23^rd, some of the children from Junior and Senior OSC attended the pumpkin patch out trip. They had so much fun and the weather was absolutely perfect. It was so nice to see the kids running around looking for that perfect pumpkin. I hope they all had fun. Enjoy these pictures and on behalf of the Junior and Senior OSC staff, have a fun and safe Halloween!

Recreation of Quidditch (Muggle Version)

Last year, West Richmond Senior Out-of-School Care Program brought you the mysterious and adventurous Space Odyssey with our leaders in their customized space suits exploring the final frontier of the human race.

This year, we wanted to bring our kids something special and different. We wanted to give our kids something that has never been tried before, and something that has only been seen in the movies.

Inspired by the magic world of Hogwarts, and the fictional series of Harry Potter, we organized a game of Quidditch, a magical sport in the enchanting realm of Harry Potter to our program.

Instead of using the Quaffle, the Bludgers, and the Broomsticks, we substituted volleyballs, dodge balls, and hockey sticks as our equipments. And the Snitch, we asked a leader to be our volunteer.

On Thursday, October 17th, Stuart and I tried to recreate the most competitive and exciting game of Quidditch from Hogwarts as our joint activity in our Sr. OSC program. The misty and foggy weather added an element of mystery and made it feel as though we were actually playing in Hogwarts.

Since we did not have magic power’s to fly with our broomsticks into the sky, this Quidditch game was as “Muggle” as it can be…  However, it was still extremely enjoyable and exciting when the game began…

Today's Hearty Snack Recipe - Carolyn and Katrina's Apple Pie!

Mmmmmmm Pie! 

Today's Hearty Snack was so delicious that we wanted to share it with everyone.  Enjoy!

Carolyn and Katrina's Apple Pie 

Ingredients: 

• 1 unbaked pie shell 
• 2-3 peeled apples (sliced thinly)

     Sugar Mixture

• 3 tablespoon sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

      Crumble Topping

• 1/4 cup of brown sugar
• 1/4 cup of flour
• 2 tablespoon of butter

Preparations: 

• Preheat oven to 375 degrees
• Fill pie shell with apple slices
• Spoon sugar mixture over apples
• Press topping on top of apples; cover all spaces
• Bake for 25-30 minutes; or until apples are soft. (Pie should be golden brown) ***Note: Time varies from oven to oven :) )

And Now a Word From Us Kids...

Hi Senior OSC Families!

My name is Noah and yesterday we had a professional artist named Jeanette come by OSC to get ideas for a stairwell art project in the community centre. Below are my friends and my thoughts on the process so far.

The time I had with the Jeanette, an artist, was fun because so many people had so many great ideas.  I was typing notes the whole time. She showed us pictures of the staircase that leads up to Junior OSC so we could get an idea of what type of paintings/drawings we could put in. We got to see some pictures and artwork that she made at the end and it was amazing. We had so many ideas for the landing, the bottom of the staircase, along the wall of both staircases, even ideas with the things outside. We also had ideas for other things that the preschoolers would like.

I think it was pretty cool to be in a meeting with a professional artist.  She showed us some of the art that she made.  It was cool that we had so many good ideas and I think lots of people enjoy that experience, and so did I!

When I heard that we had a pro artist coming to talk to us about making a mural, I was so exited! The minute that she and Emily came in, my brain had a jolt of energy and I had so many ideas that I had to tell Jeanette and Emily all at once. But, just like everybody else, I had to wait my turn. But she had so many good ideas and the theme that she had chosen was a great idea.  So, just in general, I was so exited and happy that we had an artist coming to talk to us.  I was exited that I could give my input to the ideas that we all had. I had a great time!

Check Out What is New At OSC!

            Although SR. OSC is old and historic, we thought that it would be nice spice the multi-purpose room up a bit. With new vibrant colours decorating the bulletin boards, our room has become even more active. On one board we have asked the children to put their handprints on the wall, signing their names underneath; and on the other board we have a beautiful sunset behind a grand pirate ship sailing to an island, which will soon be joined by pirate leaders. Surely though we can’t forget our new seat covers! Taking one look at them should bring up some memories of Austin Powers, the 60’s, or even the bright clothing the children are wearing now! We hope that you enjoy the artsy pieces around the room; hopefully there is more to come!

            You may also notice the new choices board now located by the sign-in binder. We have attached it to a moveable, more centralized easel.  Feel free to use it to see what activities your child is up to.

Stu's Dream Catchers

Hey Parents!

With the school year well in-gear and homework becoming a regularity, it is important to get a good night sleep in order to stay healthy and be ready for the next day! And what better way to have pleasant dreams than by making your very own Dreamcatcher? With a few simple items like paper plates, string, beads and some feathers the kids and I created colourful and unique dreamcatchers. As I'm sure many of you know, dreamcatchers are supposed to filter out those bad dreams and pesky nightmares in order to ensure a happy and relaxing sleep!

Here's a picture of some the kids working hard and deciding what types of string and beads to put on their creations!

As you can see by the finished products the kids got creative in their choice of colours, web design and types of beads and feathers in order to make a dreamcatcher that totally suits them!

       

For those that participated in the activity, I hope that your dreamcatchers do their job and that you (and of course your parents as well) have nothing but good dreams for the months to come!
