Hockey Fever at Sr. OSC!

With the NHL hockey season back in full swing, the excitement of Canada’s game has carried over to us here at Sr. Out-of-School Care. Multiple activities have begun for the kids to enjoy, each of which challenge and excite in different ways.

A fantasy hockey league has started, with seven kids and two leaders going through the process of picking their favorite NHL hockey players. Each week, the kids kept track of their team of compiled NHL players, calculating different categories of statistics and matching up head to head against another kid or leader. Based on their performance, the kids saw where they ranked on our leaderboard each week. This activity provided the kids the opportunity to strategize when picking their players, utilize and apply technology in order to organize statistics, as well as putting them head to head in friendly, but fun, competition.

In addition to the fantasy hockey league, the kids have been bringing in their own miniature hockey sticks and have been playing self-regulated games of mini hockey. This has worked out great as they have been organizing their own tournaments and having a blast!

To top it all off, Adam has started up Sr. OSC’s annual floor hockey league, “OSCHL.” As usual the kids are spending their time honing their skills and feeling the rush of playing hockey together on a team. OSCHL games are taking place weekly on Wednesday, with opportunities for a tournament to place in the coming months.

The Keva Revolution!

The Keva Revolution has begun at Sr. OSC; from replicas of monuments from around the world, to one of a kind originals made by the kids at OSC, there has been no limit to what the kids have been able to build. Inspired by our recent out-trip to Science World during Spring Break, the Keva experiment has blossomed into something quite amazing in our program. We have seen skyscrapers resurrect from these simple pieces of wood; to towns with multiple churches and buildings all developed with different purposes in mind. Kids have joined together throughout their day coming up with new and better ideas. We often find them collaborating and combining their ideas. Here are some of the most recent entries in our Keva building challenge. The kids had one hour to work together to create something original and unique. Dungeons & Dragons

At roughly three and one half hours past the mid-day mark on the Wednesday of each week, a group of young, adventure seeking, students embark on mystical journeys through the different realms of imagination. The group of ruffians started out as a mean posse stealing wherever they could but soon after a couple harsh lessons they soon realized that just like in life there is going to be consequences for all your actions. They quickly went from being thieves to heroes as they saved several towns from bands of pirates made up of trolls, orc’s, and evil wizards. In defeating the evil Sea of Swords Clan, the fellowship of the Fellows Ship reclaimed 3 dragon eggs that would have been raised for pure evil and mayhem. The eggs were returned to the rightful keepers for a handsome reward. The Fellowship of the Fellows Ship embark into another journey filled with bravery, treacherous traps, unspeakable evil, and growing friendships between characters and players alike. Stay tuned for more adventures in this fun, role playing game the kids at Sr. OSC cant get enough of; Dungeons and Dragons.

And They All Fall Down ...

Despite the set backs, a group of budding architects (or at least fans of dominos) built an impressive structure out of dominos.  This task took quite a long time to complete and there were moments when the small group wanted to quit.  This was especially true when they were 3-4 dominos away from completion and the entire track was accidently knocked down.  Perseverance was evident when they re-built their structure for one last time.   Finally the moment they had been waiting for had arrived; the time had come to knock down the exact thing they had spent an hour building.  The video above is the result of their hard work.  Well done guys!

Art Attack Month: "3D Photos!"

This week, for the Art Attack project, we wish to bring the photos into 3D! 3D sounds sophisticated and complicated. However, we find the easy and simple way to create 3D photos.

To start, you can simply chose the photo you want from a book, a magazine, or even use your own favorite photo. After that, make 3 copies of your photo. You can either use a photocopy machine or color printer from home to make those copies.

When you have 3 copies of the photo, you can start to make your own 3D photo!

First, decide which parts of the picture should be in each layer.  We can have three layers, so something can be in the front, the middle, and finally the back.

Then, trace which objects you want in each layer, cut them out, and stick folds of paper to add depth to each object depending on how close you want them to be.

While you are doing this with kids, different photos or pictures can provide different levels of challenge for the kids. Following are the steps for a more difficult picture.

Again, making 3D photo requires plenty of patience from the kids but it's not as hard as you think it is. With some careful snipping and pasting, you can make any picture 3D!

Chocolate Creation

This week we stepped into Willy Wonka's world and learnt how to create our own chocolate lollipops. The children had the opportunity to learn the art of melting chocolate and how the chocolate gets its different colours. They had the chance to learn how to fill in the chocolate in the different molds after they were melted and coloured. The processes gave the children the chance to see all the hard work that goes into making a simple chocolate bar, and a better understanding of making it themselves compared to going to a store and buying one. After waiting 30 mins they were able to eat and enjoy there own creation.

Exploration In-Day

Here at OSC we asked the children to come explore with us during a recent in-day.  The challenge put forth to the group was to create a vehicle of any kind that could be later used to watch a movie 'drive in style.'  Many groups were formed and soon the multi-purpose room was covered in cardboard, tape, and imagination.  Spaceships, trains, race cars, and more began to take shape around the room.  Zoe even built a life size replica of a film reel. The hallways were just as busy with most of the creations getting a paint job before lunch.  After all the vehicles were finished and lunch was enjoyed everyone made their way into the gym with their creations.  The gym was transformed into an old school drive in movie theater with a new school twist (where else could you find spaceships and trains at a drive in movie theater other than OSC?) In keeping with our Exploration theme we watched an invention filled movie.  It was amazing to see what everyone was able to create with just their mind, some time and a lot of cardboard.  Well done everyone!
