Let It Snow!!!

As the weather continues to surprise us by blowing in more snow from Sunday, the kids become ever more excited. As we all gear up for this snowy surprise we think what snow means to us over here at Sr. OSC: sleds, snowballs, snowmen, snow forts and anything else their minds can come up with. Arriving from school, the children and staff get ready for the hours of fun with our snow pants on and mittens in hand, for our fluffy white friends outside only visits us a few times a year. All the kids want to do is enjoy the snowy goodness to its best and hope that it stays for a little while longer.

Duct Tape Madness

Today at OSC, many of the kids participated in making duct tape wallets.  Though this is not a new activity, it seems to attract them every time.  We had a variety of colours for the kids to choose from, including neon’s like pink, green, and orange, and patterns like gummy bears, skateboards and tie-dye!  It was so interesting to see what the kids came up with.  I gave them some instruction as how to start off the shape using construction paper, but after that creative freedom was left to them.

We had a few traditional wallets, with a regular money slot and card slots, but then we had one wallet where the card slots went horizontal instead of vertical and left room for a “duct tape I.D.”!  There were also a few pouches made as well.  One was made specifically to hold the child’s wallet, and the other was going to be used to hold small stuff animals.  The one meant for stuffed animals even had a duct tape bow on it.  It was so neat to see the different personalities come through the children’s choices of colours, patterns and styles of wallets.  It was especially neat to ask what they would use them for (ex. the stuffed animals). Check below for some of the wallets that I thought really turned out.

Until next time!

Sr. OSC Hunger Games

Hi Everybody!
With the New Year well under way the staff here at Sr. OSC are constantly revising and tweaking programs and activities so that the kids can get the most out of them. Recently we have been telling the children that we were going to do more group activities and games in the gym as opposed to simply doing free-play. The kids responded in kind by deciding that they wanted to play a group game in the gym called The Hunger Games!
Don't worry parents, these weren't the Hunger Games to which Katniss is all too familiar – it is actually a modified version of a game we like to play in the gym called Cross the Canyon.
The game is simple: SURVIVE! All the kids start at one end of the gym and must run, duck, dip and dodge balls thrown at them from leaders on the sidelines as they try to get to the other side safely. There are plenty of mats, makeshift shelters and obstacles that the kids can use for temporary safety from the dodgeballs as they try and survive each day (or round) of the Games. However, unlike like the real Hunger Games, getting out doesn't mean you have to stay out indefinitely! In fact, the beauty of this game is that if a player (or Tribute) is hit with a dodgeball they can now join their fellow fallen comrades on the sidelines and throw dodgeballs at the players still in the game!
The Hunger Games end when there is but one lone survivor! But as we well know from the books and films, the end of one Hunger Games means that another is inevitable, and so the Games must go on!
Here's a picture of the arena

A Tribute showing his skills during The Hunger Games – But will he win?
The best part of the activity was the fact that the kids initiated it themselves and had a blast doing so!
Have a great week and may the odds be ever in your favour!
